What Is HIIT And Why It’s The Best Workout Routine
Whenever someone asks me which machine works best to impress the ladies, I always say the ATM. It is a nifty little joke that also tells quite a compelling story about where your focus, as a person working out, should be.
If you’re out in the gym to impress the ladies, you might as well quit, because your biceps will rarely be turning female heads. Male, maybe – of other bodybuilders impressed by your physique. Even this is a big maybe.
When it comes to working out, you definitely need to have another reason. Health, self-esteem, strength, all of these are viable. One of the biggest reasons why men decide to hit the gym (women, as well, for that matter), is to lose weight.
Cardio Won’t Help You Lose Weight
One of the biggest misconceptions about losing weight is that you need to do a ton of cardio. I’ve read it a thousand times – when under load, the body first burns Creatine, then sugar for another 15 minutes, and then fat. After the initial 15-minute warm-up, you start burning fat, so a 45-minute run would mean 30 minutes of burning fat. In reality – this is completely wrong.
I won’t go into much detail about why this is wrong because it would take me much more than a single blog post to do it – just google ‘marathon runner’ and you’ll get my point – they’re mostly either really skinny, or skinny-fat. That’s not really the best shape you want to be in.
Go For High Intensity
Instead of low-intensity, long cardio workouts, what you want to do is go for a high intensity, interval training – HIIT. They are designed to last shorter (anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes), they use less weights and force you to make less breaks between repetitions.
Such a training regime forces the body to be in constant movement for an extended period of time, thus burning fat. At the same time, it’s forcing all the muscles in the body to activate, which does two things:
- Stimulates muscle growth
- Burns fat
And finally, it improves your overall physique, your endurance, looks and strength.
A high intensity interval training will have you gain muscle, while at the same time lose weight. It won’t see you stuck in the gym for hours, doing same old boring treadmill day in, day out. These workouts are intense, they’re hard to do, but they’re also fun and create the best results.
It won’t take long before you transform your body and start looking where to buy the sexiest cocktail dress, or a suit you couldn’t fit into last year.
Forget long cardio workouts, they are completely useless. They are a waste of time, they are boring and will put enormous stress on your joints, both in knees, ankles, and lower back. Worst of all – you won’t get the result you were looking for.
Instead, go for the high intensity interval training and watch your fat disappear.
